I opened my eyes to find Selina bent over my torso.

Whatever she was doing made my side ache and tingle at the same time. It still felt better than before, so I could deal. Someone had moved me from the floor to a cot without waking me up. Not surprising with how out of it I was. Pushing past the grogginess, I lifted my head to see what the doc was doing.

“Stay still,” she ordered. “That mono-blade thing did a number on your insides. A healing pod would be ideal, but—“

She gestured around the meager medbay. Barrick was laid out on the cot next to mine, and Camilla had taken my spot on the floor. Both looked better, if exhausted. Deacon, who had claimed a corner of the room, had his head tipped back and arms resting on his knees. The two Anypsians stood sentry by the door to round things out.

“But,” I agreed.

There wasn’t much to do while the medic worked. I could feel pressure from the alien medical device rooting around in my side, but it didn’t hurt. Wishing I’d stayed asleep, I scanned the room in hopes of finding a way to relieve the boredom. A useless endeavor without the visor overlay that only served to remind me of our lost gear. The assholes hadn’t stopped at weapons and equipment. They’d even taken my data pad. I’d been in the middle of a good book too.

My mind wandered when I got bored. At the moment, the most interesting things in my line of sight were the two Anypsians standing at the door.

They looked pretty chummy to me.

After getting some of his memories back, Gray seemed to feel less apathetic toward his former partner. That had to ease some of the tension and awkwardness for Switch. Witnessing how their relationship used to be also gave me a better understanding of the Chaos Agent. From the sounds of things, she planned the rest of her life around Gray. I didn’t know if she’d had any ambition or dreams of her own before that, but if so, Switch gave them all up to follow her man. Then he disappeared for years, only to come back close to a group of humans with no memory of her. If it were me, I’d be more than a little pissed.

Point was, Switch deserved a little empathy.

Gray had claimed not to feel much, but that seemed to be changing. Maybe once the Controllers had been dealt with, she and Gray could still have their happily ever after.

“Are Cam and Barrick all healed up?”

“Yep, just sleeping it off. Honestly, I think the three of you got lucky. Cam could have easily lost that arm. Same with Barrick’s leg. You were centimeters away from being down a vital organ or two.”

Gray looked over and shook his head. It was not luck. Humans are routinely underestimated by other races throughout the universe, but I have learned just how capable you can be. Skill, instinct, and tenacity are just a few reasons today did not go worse.
